Renzo Piano

Screen Shot 2017-02-06 at 9.34.55 AMThe Bechtler Museum of Modern Art screens Renzo Piano (52 minutes) Thursday, February 23 as part of the museum’sModernism + Film series.

Widely known and acclaimed independent Italian architect and engineer, Renzo Piano, is celebrated in this documentary which follows three projects of Piano at different stages of progress, all along while exploring his artistic philosophies as well as his working methods.

The film brings together many of Piano’s closest collabrators in an attempt to create a “real-life” representation of an architect who sees his profression as a “living thing, developing with time and practice”. A few recognizable structures created by Piano include the Pompidou Center in Paris, the recently inaugurated Centre Culturel Jean-Marie Tjibaou in New Caledonia, the Menil Museum in Houston, the Kansai International Airport Terminal in Japan, the New York Times building in Manhattan and finally the Stadio San Nicola in Italy.

Renzo Piano was an independent non-conformist architect who owes his fame in part to the immense opportunity of his work which can be found throughout the world. The film shows how Piano stays true to the artisan approach that inspires his initial creation, and his efforts to find answers to specific problems of these projects in terms of the history, location and the construction sites, as well as their purpose and their financial condition. Piano describes architecture as a “contaminated art”, he believes that architecture should offer the public opportunities for contemplation and should co-exist with other disciplines such as science, technology and sociology.

Born in 1937 in Geno, Italy, Renzo Piano, inherited the family trait of craftsmanship. While studying at the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan), Piano worked under the design guidance of Franco Albini. After graduation in 1964, Piano began work for his father’s company, but shortly left and began work for Louis I. Kahn in Philadelphia and ZS Makowski in London from 1965-’70. During his career (1978-2000), Renzo Piano was granted nearly 30 various awards with the most prestigious being the Pritzker architecture prize for his design of the Kansai International Airport, which he received at the White House in 1998.
