Inside|Out is a community activated art project that places high-quality reproductions of artworks in neighborhoods across selected cities and is generously funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Imagine encountering Andy Warhol’s Marilyn outside a YMCA or emerging artist Jordan Casteel’s Kevin The Kite Man in the middle of a park. Beginning April 30th, Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents will be able to do just that! Two local institutions – Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture – are joining forces to bring Inside|Out to Charlotte.

What is Inside|Out?

Glad you asked.

Inside|Out is a community activated art project that places high-quality reproductions of artworks in neighborhoods across selected cities and is generously funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Inside|Out Charlotte will join this national effort and feature replicas of artworks that are currently on display at the Bechtler and the Gantt Center. As we dot Charlotte neighborhoods with beautifully framed, large-scale reproductions of images by masters like Pablo Picasso and emerging artists like Zun Lee, we’ll build bridges among Charlotteans. In addition, the images that you’ll see in communities across Charlotte will reflect the diversity of our collections and exhibitions and our broad partnerships.

And the fun won’t stop there.

Each community who hosts an exhibition – that’s 5 to 7 reproductions located within walking (or biking) distance – will also offer activities and events during the run of their show. We’re talking trolley tours, outdoor guided painting sessions for beginners, art-making workshops for kids and maybe, even, cooking classes. Most with no cost to participants.

Upcoming scheduled exhibition seasons: September 3 – December 3, 2017, and April 30 – July 8, 2018.

We made the CharlotteFive 2017 Bucket List! Described as the “Uptown Museum Trifecta”, making a visit to the Gantt, Mint and Bechtler Museums ranked #5 on this year’s list of things to do in Charlotte:

(5) Visit the Uptown Museum Trifecta: Gantt, Bechtler and Mint.

Charlotte has some of the Southeast’s top museums and you’re officially out of excuses for having not already paid them a visit. Plus, it’s easy to make these museums extra fun. Check out the Gantt After Dark series with its rooftop DJ, or Jazz at the Bechtler featuring drinks and music alongside its modern art. And on Wednesday nights the Mint is free, so stop by for a peek of its latest exhibit. Pro tip: For bonus cultural points, pay a visit to other top Uptown museums like Discovery Place and the Levine Museum of the New South.”
