“Think of it as the musical equivalent of walking into Ben & Jerry’s and saying: ‘I’d like a spoonful of everything, please.’ ” -CREATIVE LOAFING. Two decades ago, John Tosco invited a few of his musician friends for an informal song circle/jam session in his living room. These “Music Parties” became a way to gather with friends and fellow musicians to create an evening of acoustic music. What began in Tosco’s living room soon moved on to larger venues. Now the Tosco Music Party is a quarterly concert series and is the premier family musical event in the Charlotte area. The format still retains the original “living room” feeling and is a performance of one or two songs by each of a variety of approximately 15 scheduled acts. The evening offers an eclectic mix of all styles of music and includes Tosco’s trademark sing-alongs. Tosco Music is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been enhancing Charlotte’s community through music for over 25 years. In addition to the family-friendly musical events, Tosco Music coordinates outreach that includes fundraising for youth music scholarships.

As original members of UB40, Ali, Mickey and Astro helped to define reggae music for a generation. The multi-racial band, formed in 1979 in the Birmingham suburb of Moseley, pooled a diverse set of influences to put a fresh, indigenous slant on Jamaican reggae. After encouragement from Chrissie Hynde, who offered them support slots with her chart-topping band The Pretenders, they recorded their independently released debut album, Signing Off, on an eight-track tape machine in the home of producer Bob Lamb. An unexpected number two album, it gave them the conviction to chart their own course.

UB40 went on to dominate charts around the world, not least with the hugely successful Labour Of Love series. The first Labour Of Love album, in 1983, yielded a cover of Neil Diamond’s Red Red Wine that topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The band secured two further chart-topping singles at home in (I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You (also another US number one) and I Got You Babe, a duet between Ali and the band’s old friend Chrissie Hynde, and Ali and Robin Campbell also scored a No.1 with Baby Come Back.

When Ali Campbell departed in 2008 after 29 years and a dozen major world tours with the band, he was followed out of UB40 by Mickey Virtue. Campbell, with Mickey lending a helping hand, has since released two solo albums. Astro remained with the band until November 2013, when he left to team up again with Ali and Mickey. Now, following some spectacular gigs at home and abroad, the trio is facing the future with renewed confidence and vigour.

Five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Mary Chapin Carpenter hits the road in 2017, performing songs from her expansive 14-album catalog and new songs from her latest record The Things That We Are Made Of, released May 6, 2016.

Produced by 2016 Producer of the Year Grammy-nominee Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton), the album features eleven new songs written by Carpenter and has received critical acclaim from NPR and Rolling Stone, among others.

The Huffington Post praises, “Beautifully written and lovingly paced, The Things That We Are Made Of is an uplifting and very human account of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s self-reflective consciousness.” Continued praise from Jezebel says the album is “…filled with gentle reflections of a life that has reached yet another turning point—one with both plenty of living left, as well as plenty of living to learn from. Produced by Dave Cobb, its simple, sturdy arrangements allow the wisdom of Carpenter’s lyrics to maintain our focus throughout all 11 of its gorgeous tracks.”

Over the course of her acclaimed career, Carpenter has recorded 14 albums and sold over 14 million records. With hits like ”Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards, two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals and is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This community-centered evening program is geared towards lovers of Hip Hop music and culture. This one-of-a-kind event includes a special performance from JAHI of Public Enemy 2.0! Watch as the lyrics from Hip Hop classics come to life right in front of your eyes. During the evening presentation of The Intersection, JAHI will broaden the conversation around how we can preserve and elevate Hip Hop for the culture!

Hip Hop culture continues to be the dominating energy around the world through the four founding elements (MC, DJ, Graffiti Art, and Breakin’). With the emergence of strides in fashion, new forms of language, street knowledge and entrepreneurialism increasingly prevalent in all areas of global culture, Hip Hop needs to be in constant dialogue, critique, redefinition and refinement as it continues to expand and grow. Hip Hop culture creates art. Hip Hop is art. But all too often it is only appreciated in club or performance atmospheres.

Black Violin is the blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music. Live, they are accompanied by their incredible band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and a drummer. Named one of the hottest bands at SXSW in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSBlack-Violin_1000_2_NEW-e554e9dab9W this year to SRO crowds.

“Black Violin works hard, but makes it all look like play… Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown; at still others they strum the violin and viola like guitars.” New York Times

Since starting Black Violin a decade ago Wil Baptiste and  Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester have performed an average of 200 shows a year in 49 states and 36 countries as far away as Dubai, Prague and South Africa, while appearing at official NFL celebrations for three Super Bowls and last year’s U.S. Open in Forest Hills with Jordin Sparks. Their groundbreaking collaboration has seen them play their music for everybody from the troops in Iraq to both the official President’s Inaugural Ball and the Kids Inaugural in Washington, DC, where Barack Obama himself gave each a hearty hand-shake.  Individually and together, Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of P.
